Clarification on IPL Venue Shift
New Delhi, June 2: Rajeev Shukla, the vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has refuted claims suggesting a 'political agenda' behind the relocation of the playoffs and final for the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The tournament faced a week-long suspension due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, prompting the BCCI to revise the IPL playoff schedule. Initially, Kolkata was set to host the final, while Qualifier 2 was moved to Ahmedabad. Additionally, Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator were originally planned for Hyderabad but were relocated to New Chandigarh.
The decision to change the venue for the IPL final and Qualifier 2 from Kolkata to Ahmedabad has sparked significant criticism, with some alleging a political motive behind the shift from Eden Gardens.
Shukla addressed these allegations, emphasizing that the venue change was primarily influenced by weather conditions. He stated that had the original schedule been maintained, Kolkata would have hosted the final, and Hyderabad would have retained the playoff matches.
“There is no political influence in the decision regarding the IPL 2025 final venue change. If the tournament had not been suspended for a week, the final would have taken place in Kolkata, and the playoffs in Hyderabad. The weather considerations led to the adjustments, and even broadcasters recommended the venue change to mitigate potential losses,” he explained.
The 65-year-old official confirmed that various venues were evaluated for the playoffs, with New Chandigarh and Ahmedabad being the top choices due to their lower likelihood of rain.
“We considered all possible venues, including Delhi, Lucknow, Chennai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad. Based on weather forecasts, New Chandigarh and Ahmedabad had the least chance of rain. The matches were moved from Hyderabad as well, not just Kolkata. These rumors of a political agenda are unfounded,” he added.
The IPL 2025 final is scheduled to take place on Tuesday in Ahmedabad, featuring the Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, both of whom are yet to claim the title.
